Lily 'Logues Out

Aug 14, 2007 @ 2:07pm

scan0032.jpgThe ultimate insult from ANTM judges is that a contestant might be “too catalog, as if the catalog and runway worlds don’t mix.

But in the real fashion industry, why can’t a successful model do both high fashion and mass market?

We were a little surprised to see Lily Cole in the new ads for Bloomingdale’s, instead of for Prada or Burberry.

We briefly wondered if her prestige as a model had passed, but then we realized:

With Lily for Bloomingdale’s and Jess Stam for Barneys, maybe being “catalog isn’t as bad as Tyra makes it seem...

But what about Caroline Winberg posing for beauty chain store Ulta?

i don't think being "commercial" is as awful as ANTM makes it out to be, but i guess i can see where being a runway model is more preferred .. or whatever i'm trying to say.

it's not like she's modeling for kohl's; it's bloomingdale's for god's sake!

I always find it funny that Tyra makes it seem like being "commercial/catalog" is bad considering she was a Victoria Secret model...I'm pretty sure catalog girls make money too...

SO many big models do catalogues. Heather Marks, Julia Dunstall, Maryna Linchuk, Vlada...etc etc...they were all just in Neiman Marcus' September catalogue.

Emina and Caroline W do Bloomingdales all the time. Jessica is doing Barney's, like you said.

It's totally NOT a bad thing. It gets the models good money, and good exposure to the "regular" people who aren't into high-fashion stuff.

Lily's lookin' good! (My redheaded self adores her)

I think what Tyra means when she says someone's "too catalog" is that they would perhaps be limited to that medium / she couldn't see them doing runway. That's what makes the most sense to me, anyway.

I just saw Irina Lazareanu in a department store ad too ... it's b/w, but I can't think of the store ... All I know is that the last image had her in Ellen Tracy. It may not be sexy, but hey, it pay's a hell of a lot more than editorial.

Models have a very limited time to make as much money as possible as most are considered "too old" by their mid-20s. You can only walk in so many shows where you're paid in clothes. Eventually, the plush day rates of catalog work come a callin'.

there has never been a more commercial model than Tyra Banks. I guess she thinks appearing in swimsuits in a men's mag, cheap lingerie and feather wings on a runway, and hosting game shows is "high fashion". There is also a difference between Bloomingdales and Barneys..if you catch my drift.

Bloomingdale's and Barneys don't count because they are higher end retailers. When they say a model looks too "catalog" they probably mean Sears or JCPenney or something like that.

I think it has a lot to do with Sept 11th, and how even the big photographers are shooting for more commercial/ and or smaller gigs that they wouldn't have done before then. Same goes for models. Less money out there to be spent, so the biggies do the smaller gigs......

case in point........alexei hay shot a cover of seventeen mag after sept 11, maybe two years later, and a big art and commerce stylist styled a celeb for stuff magazine...........both projects that typically are way beneath such high profile talent.

companies are shelling out less money, so the bigger girls are forced to do less presitigious projects...this is my theory

Haha, today they were doing ANTM casting calls at the mall. I swear half the girls were pregnant and hoping they'd pop before the show began. ANyway, I think Gemma is fantastic looking, but the rest of the favorites on these boards I can't really get into their looks. The models I think are gorgeous are the ones that typically do catalogue work. I think Tyra is one of the most ignorant people in showbiz and I'mnot sure she ever has any idea what she's talking about.

I don't understand why catalog must be boring. Everything is about collaboration and mish-mash, surely it's time to kick the dead dog that is catalogue into soemthing more interesting? Perhaps this is the beginning

Yes and Tyra has done such a good job picking "top models". I mean you see them all over the place, right? Please note my sarcasm.

Its actually a matter of fact that more commercial places like Barneys and bloomingdales pay the models more that so called "trendy" modeling work

Every model does catalogue. When the average editorial shoot pays $150/day, the 'editorial' girls need to make money somehow. It is their agent's job to determine what catalogues they can and can't do. When I was a booker, bloomingdale's was that border-line job..if a model was on the verge of being a star, we would definitely hold off on bloomie's. Things like Macy's were a definite 'no.' Catalogues like neimans, barneys and bergdorfs typically pay very well for top girls and use great photographers, so it's not your typical catalogue shoot. I mean, we would sometimes even use Bergdorf or Neimans shots in a models book - they were that gorge. As for ANTM - WHY won't someone do an expose story on how all of Tyra's top models are horrible failures that stay with the winning agency only until the second the contract expires and the agency drops them like their hot?? Fashionista... please?
