Is The New: Mary Kate and Lily Donaldson?

Flipping through Fendi's photos on Style.com lead to a few observations:

1. If we didn't know better, we'd think the dress patterns were woven in silk, not mink and leather - amazing.

2. The mosaic necklines on some of the dresses are both referential and futuristic - incredibly cool.

3. Lily Donaldson's back looks awfully awful in this picture. It reminds us of the Mary Kate photos from her Hollywood Walk of Fame induction, just before the starlet was rushed to rehab with an eating disorder / drug problem (circle one).

If we combine the skeletal shadows on Lily's body with her current It Girl status, we have to wonder - is Lily Donaldson the new Mary Kate?

It's icky enough to distract us from the rest of the Fendi show, which (again) was a million layers of gorgeous.

MK looks bigger than lily... and that's saying something, considering that she's almost a foot shorter... that's scary.

Wow. Lily was always skinny, but not like this; she looks like she lost a ton of weight. She's probably a double zero with a back like that.

You, know, it's sort of depressing - last year there was so much uproar about how the industry was going to support healthier models; but I haven't seen it put into effect. The old girls (Snejana, Lily, Vlada, Sasha, Irina, Freja, etc) are just as skinny as ever. And look at the new ones - I wouldn't call Anabela, Tanya D. or Ali Michael healthy looking.

Hilary Rhoda is more athletic looking, but she was absent from the runways this season.

At this point I don't think the standards for modeling will ever change. I love fashion and understand that models are thinner than average people; but lately it's going far beyond average. Not to mention it sometimes makes me feel fat when I see pics from the runway, and I'm a size 4-6.
I just can't get over how skinny Lily D looks now!

Anyway, on a happier note, I agree - the Fendi show was very gorgeous indeed!

Lily is MUCH smaller than she was about 6 months ago when I met her... back then she looked pretty normal- tall thin and gorgeous, but normal. Shasha was the thinnest of the girls we worked with and this season she's looking like one of the 'healthier' models... interesting...

That was absolutely the first thing I noticed when I looked at that picture. I'm sorry Lily. That is just not attractive at all! You're so skinny, it's gross! But its sad because you look really happy but it wouldn't hurt to gain 5 lbs honey!

All I can think of is how these models are doing the clothes ZERO justice. Flipping through the pics on Style.com all I could think about was how Lily's head looks so disproportionate to the rest of her body.

The DSquared guys really hit it right though. All their models looked HEALTHY and they almost gave the clothes new life! Maybe it's just because it fits into their aesthetic but at least this time I could focus on the clothes.

My Favorite is Kim Noorda. I fell in love with her a year ago but noticed that she had been losing her appeal to me. I compared a photo from the Spring 07 collection with one from Spring 08 and she has lost too much weight. her elbows are knobby and her rib cage is showing way too much. At the Marc Jacobs show I was distracted from the amazing clothes by the disgusting underwear run thru that was playing simultaneously. The idea was great but as all of the concave chests were projected massively onto screens took away form his creative genius. What is goign on with these girls? Their agents need to start taking care of them....

re: alex:

No, you are not the only one. See: 'pro-ana movement'. Oh, what am I thinking. If you that's what your idea of perfection is, I'm sure you're already well acquainted.

And re: Fendi: I agree wholeheartedly. Breathtaking show. Perfect.

Hey…

And speaking of the Dsquared show…I thought all of the models looked fabulous! I too, have been in love with Kim, gosh, I think since she started, and I will agree that she is looking thinner than usual. However, I keep struggling with whether or not these ladies are just maturing to their "adult" levels, or is there something in the form of irregular eating habits?

I also though Shannon Click looked awesome! She is in my top 5 for all time; however, I noticed that she, just like Kim was looking lean; although, in Shannon's case she's ripped. Look at her leg muscles and bicepts!

One last thing…over at Style.com (I think…) where they have all of the bigger more important shows, anyway, at Dsquared's show there is one particular model who remains unnamed; sort of very Linda V. looking yet, softer and younger. Anyone? Take a guess? She's the only one unnamed. Cheers!

Love this site,

re: sydneylights...

if these girls were maturing at their adult levels (sans irregular eating habits, or lack of eating habits at all..), the would be gaining weight, not losing it.

sure, you lose 'baby fat' as you get older... this means a maturation of the face, hips instead of pudge, breasts instead of fried eggs etc... but drastic weight loss will never be synonymous with maturing.

ps- sydneylights, not hating.. just adding to your comment :). peace.

Yes, she's skinny, but to be fair it's partly the pose. If you're thin and you hunch forward hugging yourself, you're going to see ribs!

She looks so ill in this pic, bless her

Personly I don't see why models are trying to get so skinny, I mean if I wanted to make my self look better in the catwalk clothes I would tone up in the gym AND eat healthy.
(and by healthy I mean actully eat!)

It is a little sad to see that designers don't realize that when you are gasping at the skeletal models, you cannot really focus on the clothes. Some designers, I just hate because of all the skeletal models. Whenever I see Coco, though, I think wow she looks great. She's got a great body AND looks great in the clothes.
